Review: Patrick Crowson – A Mile Past The Dead End
Patrick Crowson – A Mile Past The Dead End (Hop Hollow Music)
Insurgent country troubadour Patrick Crowson is a musical man of mystery. Well, maybe he’s not, but whatever I read about him, wherever I read it, I don’t come out the other side any the wiser. “A Mile Past The Dead End” is his third album of rootsy singer-songwriter fare, and fortunately, everything you need to know about the man can be found in these silver grooves.
His sound falls somewhere between the broken country heartbreak of the late great TVZ and contemporary performers such as Israel Nash Gripka and Simone Felice. That’s no bad place to be, and when he hits his stride here, on songs like “Guitar Strings”, the Dylan-esque “Laurence of New Jersey” or the wayward “Mark the Drifter” he’s damn near irresistible. Needless to say, he’s best taken with strong drink.
